Introducing Yourself in English
When you meet someone for the first time, it is polite to introduce yourself. After you greet them with a Hello (see Lesson 1) we use the following ways:
Statements: Used to introduce oneself or another.
"My name is [Your Name]."
My (Possessive Adj) Name (Indirect Object or Subject) is (verb “to be” in the present tense) _____(your name).
“I’m ______ [Your Name]."
“I (subject) Am (verb to be in present tense) _______ [Your Name]."
To introduce someone else you change the pronoun or possessive adjective.
His name is / Her name is / Their name is / their names are X, Y, and Z.
This is (other person’s name).
Below is an example from the American Television show “Friends. It shows various ways of introducing other people.
So, we use Statements like “I am ___ “ “Her name is____”, and we also use:
Questions: These change the topic to the other person in the conversation.
"What's your name?"
“What’s yours?”
"How are you?"
Pleasantries: to be polite, we express that we are happy or thankful to meet someone.
"It's nice to meet you."
“Pleasure to meet you.”
“Happy to meet you.”
“Glad to meet you”
Here are are some examples of people saying “Nice to Meet You!”
We usually echo the other speaker in our response. For example.
A: Hi! I’m Alice.
B: Hi Alice. My name is Ben. Nice to meet you.
A: Nice to meet you too!**
**Notice, we add “too” when we are repeating the same phrase as the other speaker. You can say “Nice to meet you, too.” “You, too.” or “You, as well.”
Alternatively, people may say the following to express that they too are glad to meet the other person:
“Same here.”
“Likewise.”
“Me too.”
These greetings can go in any order. For example:
A: Hi! What’s your name?
B: Phoebe.
A: Hi Phoebe! I’m Alicia.
B: Hi Alicia. Nice to meet you.
A: Nice to meet you too!
OR
A: Hey, my name is Andrew. What’s Yours.
